The first thing to mention about auto paint jobs is that you should always work in a well ventilated area. Paint fumes can include a number of solvents that can leave you feeling light headed and even poison you if you inhale them, so make sure there is free passage of air through your work shop when you are painting.

You should also wear a respirator mask during painting or preparation to avoid inhaling any paint and loose dust that you release.

Before you paint, you need to strip off the old paint job. You should use long sweeping strokes in a single direction to get a good base to paint onto. After every coat, allow the paint to dry, and then sand it back to a smooth surface.

There are two types of auto paint that you can use on a car, cellulose based and Two Pack auto paint. As with the primer, you should apply the auto paint in coats, spraying in a single direction, then sanding back to a fine surface to remove any imperfections, before applying the next layer at right angles to the previous one.

Once you are satisfied that you have got a good covering and applied enough coats of auto body paint to create an excellent finish, apply one more coat for best effects, allow it to dry, and then sand back for a smooth finish

Type Of Auto Paint

The four basic types of paint available today are: acrylic lacquer, acrylic enamel, acrylic urethane and water-based.

• Lacquer auto paint is available in aerosol spray cans and for use with spray guns, but is not generally recommended.
• Enamel paints dry to a hard shell making them tougher than lacquer paints. Once the paint is mixed, it must be used quickly and unused paint must be discarded.
• Urethane auto paint is highly toxic, and though a facemask is standard for all paint jobs, gloves, coveralls, and a respirator are mandatory for working with urethane auto paint. Like enamels, urethanes can be used alone or in multi-stage paint systems that utilize a final protective clearcoat. A two-stage urethane paint system is the most recommended system as it provides easy-on paint, minimum finish work, and optimum results: a paint job that, with a little care, can look brand new year after year.
• The newest auto paint technology has brought us non-toxic water-based paints. These paints are the most versatile of all, able to be applied to metal, primer, or to an existing paint job. Water-based paint is no doubt the future of the auto paint industry, however the line of colors is still expanding. If looking to add graphics or change your vehicle’s color, water-based auto paint is an option.
